I just finished listening to this recording via three issues. The original Shaded Dog stamper 1, the RCA re-issue .5 and the Classic Records re-issue. The original was great, the Classic re-issue blew me away.
Hi Frank, Thanks for posting this listening feedback. I also had all three but didn’t do a direct comparison. I remember the Classic being good but it didn’t strike me as “special.” How did the RCA .5 version do? Mine was kind of beat up, so I didn’t give it a good chance. My RCA .5 Scheherazade Reiner/CSO is pretty good, but not as good as the original shaded dog, for sure.
I thought I’d add my “two cents”, as I own the Analog Productions reissue of this LP. In fact – I own ‘two’ versions, as AP sent me a newly ‘fixed’ version, as my original had an extraordinary amount of ‘wow and flutter’ in the middle sections. It was a rare QA slip from an otherwise top-notch company. They sent a replacement ASAP. Anyway – the sound: (this is comparing a later stamper, original (11S, if I recall) and the Sony reissue CD). There is absolutely nothing to complain about. Even a true retro-grouch would have to admit that the reissue from Analog Production is superior to the original (that I have. I suppose I’d really need to hear a mint 1S.) Even hypothesizing about the OG, the quality of the vinyl is so good on the AP reissue, even if the sonics were matched, the noise floor is just superb. Highly recommended. In comparison to the CD (obviously, CD’s noise floor will be non-existent) the quality of the remastering is fuller on the LP. I find the the midrange is a bit recessed on the CD, but – the analog-to-digital transfer and mastering are excellent, where the master tape hiss could very well be lower on the CD. The ‘alive’ sonics are definitely worth the price of admission on the AP LP, however.

This is the second cover. The first cover has the big “Living Stereo” across the top.
