Another rare recording, especially in Stereo. As with the SR-90054 1812/Dorati destroying the LSC-2241 1812/Reiner, the Columbia’s MS-6155 Shostakovich/Bernstein’s destroyed this recording by Mitchell for Victor. For Bernstein’s was on a European Tour, which included the Soviet Union, and the famous concert at the Bolshoi Bai with Bernstein conducting this piece by Shostavovich, was 2nd to Van Cliburn’s winning the Tchaikovsky’s competition just two years before in the same hall. Thus, the Columbia release completely overtook this Mitchell recording and as with the Reiner, this Mitchell faded away in obscurity.
Do you have a personal preference? I don’t actually own this LSC, but I have a couple copies of the Bernstein and like it quite a bit.
