I bought this in the early 70s and my pressing had a bad spot in the 3rd movement – as though there had been a mastering problem that caused some very bad distortion. I could hear it, too, though not as bad on the first CD release (c. 1986). Is it present on earlier LP pressings and did it get fixed on later CD issues?
Strange. I listened to my copy twice and didn’t hear any distortion. Mine the is the Shaded Dog pictured above. Can you tell us how far into the piece the distortion occurs? I’m intrigued that this distortion may have been present on multiple formats.
Sorry for the delayed reply. I was distracted and hadn’t checked on this page, obviously for a while.
I resurrected my copy of the original CD issue (5602-2-RC) and it’s at about 2’21” into the 3rd movement but, I have to admit, hardly noticeable on the CD. My ears must have been expecting not to hear it at all on the “perfect sound” CDs of 1986 and I remembered it worse than it was. On a late LP pressing it was not only audible but visible on the surface of the record – a sort of zigzag of the groove.
