I love Reiner’s expression on this cover. He looks annoyed as hell. I wonder if RCA ever asked him to try to smile for a photo?
Come on, a smile would compromise his artistic integrity.
Famous Reiner story – Reiner’s baton technique was very subtle yet precise. He was not noted for large, grand gestures. During a rehearsal he notice someone at the back of the orchestra using a pair of binoculars. At the next rehearsal when he noticed the same individual hold up the binoculars Reiner held up a small piece of paper that simply said, “You’re fired.”
Some copies of this record have a promotional sticker on the front cover. I came across one of these records this weekend :), so I added a close-up photo of the sticker to this page. Enjoy!
Mine too, but the bottom of the sticker is torn off. I’m particularly proud of this copy, as it is also A1/A1 metal mothers, which (if Jon Valin is correct) means it’s one of the first 500 or so made. My copy is pristine, and I suspect was the property of an RCA employee (I found it in Indianapolis).
Note, this recording and (eventually) all other Living Stereo recordings are available for streaming at Naxos Music Library. They have pretty much all the major classical labels available *excep not* Universal / Polygram (DG, London, Mercury, Philips, …). Individual subscriptions run US $30.75/ month (premium quality) or $20.50/month (standard), or annually for 10x the monthly rate. http://naxosmusiclibrary.com/
Streaming RCA LSC “shaded dogs”? Blasphemy.
I have a 1s/1s (I) A1,A1 stamped “promo” on back cover of this. Sounds excellent.
This is the case I talked some years ago. The Mono version of this album LM-1806 (1954) was issued as “Richard Strauss in High Fidelity” with “Salomé: Dance of the Seven Veils”. In this Stereo version issued in 1960, “Salomé: Dance of the Seven Veils” was excluded because it didn’t fit in the record, but the original Stereo version of “Salomé: Dance of the Seven Veils” was issued years later by RCA-Victrola (VICS-1392).
